Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are nodular enlargements of veins in the lower part of the rectum and anal canal. They are a very common condition, affecting about 70% of people over the age of thirty, and are more frequently seen in men. However, hemorrhoids can also occur in younger individuals. Their development is due to the mucosa not being firmly fixed to the submucosal tissue, causing it to protrude outward.

Internal Hemorrhoids

Internal hemorrhoids occur due to the enlargement of veins beneath the mucosa in the walls of the rectum, most often triggered by increased intra-abdominal pressure. This can happen during pregnancy, obesity, straining during bowel movements, or coughing. When the pressure rises, the venous plexus swells, which may lead to bleeding or the protrusion of the venous plexus outside the anal opening. These hemorrhoids often present as bleeding during or after bowel movements, typically accompanied by relief. Bright red blood may appear on the surface of the stool. The blood from the hemorrhoid can also be absorbed, leaving an empty skin pouch that can refill with blood, resulting in a new hemorrhoid. It’s essential not to underestimate this bleeding, as it may indicate not only hemorrhoids but also a tumor in the colon.

External Hemorrhoids

External hemorrhoids are located on the external surface of the anal opening. They appear as pouch-like enlargements of a vessel, are soft, painless, and visible to the naked eye. They usually do not bleed. Problems arise when blood drainage is obstructed, often due to excessive straining during bowel movements. In this case, accumulated blood clots, causing the hemorrhoid to obstruct the area and become painful. Most often, these hemorrhoids require surgical removal.
