Wrinkles occur due to the ageing of the skin whose structure gradually loses its elasticity. A slowdown in cellular renewal and the skin’s inability to produce sufficient quantities of quality collagen, which would be able to cope with scratches to the skin, are all associated with increasing age. In the case of insufficient long-term skin hydration the wrinkling penetrates into the dermis, which is the supporting tissue of the skin. When this happens deep and very distinct wrinkles are formed.

Wrinkles are divided into static and dynamic (mimic). Dynamic wrinkles arise due to muscle contractions, which are associated with changes in facial expression. This typically begins at the age of about 35 years. Static wrinkles are caused by the weakening of the bottom of the epithelial layer of skin and a slowdown in collagen production. The emergence of static wrinkles can be observed from around 40 years of age.
