VENOUS ULCERS

Varicose ulcers are an unpleasant chronic affliction resulting from a deficiency in the venous system of the lower limbs. Varicose ulcers are most commonly found in the lower leg, and, less frequently, in the inner ankle. What begins as subtle discoloration of the skin may lead to the formation of deep and extensive suppurating wounds. Varicose ulcers represent a defect extending into the deeper skin layers and into the dermis. The ulcers can extend deep into and damage the muscles, tendons, and bones. Leg ulcers arise from arterial and venous causes.
